Beethoven: Piano Sonata No.14 in C# minor (quasi una Fantasia) (Moonlight) Op.27 No.2 - wind quintet
Beethoven's Piano Sonata No.14 in C# minor (Sonata quasi una Fantasia) Op.27. No.2, Mvt.1 also known as the "Moonlight Sonata" is probably the best known of his compositions
This arrangement is in the original key of C sharp minor.
Unlike other arrangements you will find on this site (and other sites) I have taken the unusual step of removing a large proportion of the triplet accompaniment figure, which is found in the original piano composition.
Other arrangers for wind quintet tend give this figure, as a rule, to the clarinettist, who plays the triplets all the way through the piece. (Brass quintets the horn etc etc).
I have tried to arrange it as though it had been originally written for the wind quintet.
My arrangement retains some of the triplets (the rising arpeggios) and sometimes uses the triplets on one note to add dramatic effect (particularly on the horn.
The net result is more of a chorale, but I feel it does retain the forward movement from the original with the use of moving staccato crotchets (quarter notes)
The clarinet part is for clarinet in A (Bb part also provided)
The horn part is playable on a natural horn in E (F horn part also provided)
I have also uploaded as a separate entry: a transposed score in D minor to aid those quintets who don't have an A clarinet.
